The Lieutenant Governor (Gezaghebber) of Bonaire has established the new firearms policy. With the implementation of this policy, the temporary freeze on new firearms permit applications is lifted. Residents can once again submit applications to import, export, or possess a firearm for permitted purposes. At the same time, stricter conditions are being implemented to further strengthen responsible firearm ownership and safety on Bonaire.
The firearms policy was developed following consultations with stakeholders and was synchronized with the partners in the Bonaire Triangle. The policy focuses on regulating legally permitted firearm possession and is not intended to address the issue of illegal firearms.
*New security conditions To increase safety, additional conditions are now in effect for applying for a firearm permit. Applicants must, among other things:
*submit a medical declaration from both their general practitioner and an optometrist;
*prove that they have sufficient knowledge of firearms and can handle them safely, by means of a declaration from the shooting association or the police;
*comply with the rules regarding the type of firearm and ammunition permitted for the stated purpose.
In addition, the policy also contains instructions for air rifles, airsoft guns, and paintball guns to prevent the misuse of these items.
Applications are possible again With the establishment of the policy, the temporary freeze on new applications has been lifted. Residents wishing to apply for a firearm permit for a permitted purpose can submit their application to the Lieutenant Governor’s Office via wapenmachtiging@bonairegov.com. New applications will be evaluated based on the new policy.
A firearm permit is valid for one (1) year and must be renewed annually. Applications for the extension of existing personal and general permits can be submitted between September 1 and October 15, 2026. Applications submitted after October 15 will no longer be processed.
The application process To improve service, residents can henceforth submit their application for a Certificate of Conduct (VOG) and their firearm permit application simultaneously at the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. The Certificate of Conduct (VOG) is evaluated first. In the event of a positive evaluation, the firearm permit application is automatically processed further.
Surrendering firearms on time In cooperation with the police, supervision and law enforcement regarding firearm permit conditions will be intensified. For this reason, individuals who possess a firearm without a valid permit, or who hold an expired permit, are given the opportunity to surrender their firearm to the police until August 31, 2026.
After this date, individuals found in possession of a firearm without a valid permit risk criminal prosecution by the Public Prosecution Service. To make an appointment to surrender a firearm, please contact the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force at +599 715 8000.
