Government has not fallen, but political situation remains tense

Salma Silberi

The government of Bonaire has not fallen, despite Island Council member Salma Serberie submitting an official letter announcing her withdrawal from the Democratic Party faction. With this decision, Serberie will continue her work in the Island Council as an independent member.

Up to this moment, Democratic Party leader Clark Abraham has stated that there is no clarity regarding the reasons for this decision, as he has not yet had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Ms. Serberie. The reason for her departure from the faction therefore remains unknown.

According to information received by our editorial office, although Serberie has submitted her letter of resignation from the Democratic Party faction, she has not withdrawn her support for the Bonaire government at this time. This means that the current governing coalition remains intact.

However, it is still unclear whether the situation will remain this way in the coming days. Should Serberie decide to withdraw her support from the government, the majority in the Island Council could be affected and the government could fall. The political situation on Bonaire is being described as tense.

The leader of the Democratic Party indicated that efforts will be made to sit down and engage in dialogue with Salma Serberie, with the aim of obtaining more clarity regarding the circumstances that led to this decision and to see what can be resolved, as every problem has a solution.
