Jennifer Arends-Reyes, AVP Fraction Leader: Protecting children’s rights is the responsibility of the entire community

Member of Parliament and AVP faction leader Jennifer Arends-Reyes reaffirms her commitment to defending and promoting children’s rights in Aruba. In her message, Arends-Reyes reminds us that protecting our children “is not only a moral obligation, but also a legal responsibility to which our country is committed.”

Aruba has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, but according to Arends-Reyes, the real value of that commitment depends on our daily actions. “Children’s rights cannot stay only on paper. Their well-being depends on what we, as adults, authorities, and community, do every day to guarantee it,” she explains.

She emphasizes that every child has the right to a dignified life, a safe school, quality education, and space to develop their talents. For that reason, the legislative role of Parliament is fundamental. “We must continue working on policies and laws that offer real protection. Education, social protection, and integral development must remain at the core of our priorities,” Arends-Reyes states.

Arends-Reyes mentions that Aruba faces particular challenges regarding family well-being and social protection, and she calls for more preventive programs against abuse and neglect. “A child who grows up in stability and love has a greater chance to flourish. We must provide families in difficult situations with the support they need,” she adds.

Another important issue concerns young people who leave school too early. Arends-Reyes urges better guidance and alternative programs to ensure that no young person is left behind. “Every child deserves a fair chance to achieve their goals, regardless of their background or early challenges.”

The AVP faction leader concludes with a call for unity and collective action: “Aruba has the capacity to create a future where every child feels safe, respected, and valued. This can only happen if government, schools, organizations, and the community work hand in hand. Let us continue moving forward toward an Aruba where children’s rights are not just a dream, but a reality we live every day.”
