The main suspect in the investigation into the gold that disappeared from a van in Schiedam earlier this year was arrested in July at an airport in Frankfurt, Germany, police said Monday. It’s a 54-year-old male from Badhoe village. He would have been the driver of the transport of the valuables.
The defendant has now been handed over to the Dutch authorities and has been brought before the judge-commissioner. The guy’s still in custody.
The 54-year-old suspect had gone abroad and was internationally wanted. The man was detained on 22 July when he was recognised at passport control at Frankfurt Airport.
On April 21 of this year, a valuable transport vehicle that was to transport gold was found at the New Port in Schiedam. The car had been emptied and the driver was nowhere to be seen.
Three days later, a 19-year-old man from Amsterdam was already arrested. He is suspected of having emptied the vehicle. The man has since been released, but is still a suspect.
What happened to the gold is still unknown. The police say they’re still investigating.
