Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport, and Telecommunications (TEATT), Grisha Heyliger-Marten, presented reforms aimed at simplifying the process of doing business. The announcement took place during a Town Hall organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI) at the Belair Community Center.
Addressing a broad representation of the business community, the Minister emphasized that economic growth requires a partnership between government and the private sector, built on trust, dialogue, and collaboration.
A key development is a pilot project at the Department of Economic Licenses, allowing certain applications to be submitted online. This is a step toward more accessible and transparent service, part of broader efforts to modernize systems and reduce administrative barriers.
The Minister also acknowledged that unclear requirements often discourage entrepreneurs. To address this, a public information campaign is being developed to guide citizens on procedures, documentation, and legal compliance.
Beyond licensing, she highlighted the role of the St. Maarten Small Enterprise Development Centre (SEDC) in supporting entrepreneurs through training and guidance. Continuous focus on economic diversification, including opportunities in the Orange, Green, and Blue economies, was emphasized. For example, the “Agri Loans” initiative offers financing at 2% interest.
Looking further, the Minister called for justice and transparency in the business sector, noting the need to balance support for local businesses with affordable access for the wider community. She also emphasized initiatives such as COCI’s “Start Smart” program, which helps people transition from ideas to structured businesses.
Looking ahead, the government is working on an integrated digital platform where users can apply, track progress, and manage all business-related matters in one place.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with COCI and the wider business community.
