Member of Parliament Rocco Tjon: Addressing suicide and prevention requires action, not excuses

Rocco Tjon

In recent times, Aruba has increasingly been confronted with news concerning suicide and suicide attempts. Behind every case there is deep suffering and families left behind with many questions. Could this have been prevented? The growth and visibility of these tragic cases show a worrying development that cannot be ignored.

Suicide is a social challenge. Mental health, social pressure, and access to help play a central role. For that very reason, the government — and specifically the minister responsible for Public Health — carries a major responsibility. Prevention, early detection, and sufficient capacity within the mental health sector must be priorities.

GOVERNMENT HAS NOT ALLOCATED MORE FUNDS FOR MENTAL HEALTH

Taking this into account, it is regrettable and alarming that Minister Mervin Wyatt Ras has indicated that no additional resources will be allocated to this sector, and that in the 2025 and 2026 budgets, motions to allocate more funding to this sector were rejected by the coalition parties supporting the government.

WHAT POLICY AND PROGRAMS HAS MINISTER WYATT RAS INTRODUCED?

This position does not align with the growing signals from the community and the already known pressure on this sector and its professionals. Acknowledging a problem without investing in it is not a solution. The situation raises even more questions when looking at the minister’s political past. When he was a Member of Parliament, he was a strong critic of the policies addressing mental health and claimed to have all the solutions. Now that he holds executive responsibility, he must clearly indicate what concrete changes he has implemented to address the current situation.

QUESTIONS TO THE MINISTER

For this reason, 40 questions have been submitted to the minister, specifically directed at the concrete actions taken since he took office. What measures have been implemented? What new initiatives have been launched? How much additional funding has been allocated?
