Eduard Pieters: Aruba must maintain unity and protect its budgetary rights and parliamentary autonomy

The PPA is calling on the people to closely follow Parliament and unite around the issue of the Rijkswet HOFA. Leader of the PPA faction, Eduard Pieters, made a direct appeal to the people of Aruba to rise, wake up, and closely monitor the meetings in Parliament in order to evaluate who is truly representing their interests.

According to Pieters, citizens must pay attention to the actions of the parliamentarians they elected to defend their interests. He emphasized that following public meetings is essential to maintaining transparency and accountability in the governance of the country.

During the recent meeting in Parliament, a total of 13 unions presented their concerns regarding the Rijkswet HOFA, explaining in detail what the possible consequences could be for the economy and for every household in Aruba. According to the PPA leader, the issue has a direct impact on the daily lives of citizens.

Pieters criticized the position of certain political factions, indicating that both the AVP and FUTURO factions did not ask questions during the meeting. He described this as a sign of political immaturity in a debate with broad implications for the country’s future.

The PPA faction stated that it will continue with faith and courage to promote national unity, inviting the public, unions, and business organizations to work together. According to the faction, a unified national front could demonstrate to the Netherlands that Aruba is fulfilling its obligations and managing its finances responsibly.

Additionally, Pieters confirmed that he supports a form of financial supervision, including the concept of a budget chamber (begrotingskamer), which according to him can provide oversight and transparency without compromising parliamentary autonomy.

He stressed that the main objective is not to create division over who signed previous agreements, but to strengthen national unity and focus on the current situation of the country. According to data cited by the PPA, Aruba has significantly reduced its public debt, dropping from approximately 117% during the pandemic to around 64% within a few years, with a projection to reach close to 50% by 2029.

According to Pieters, this financial progress raises questions about the real necessity of the Rijkswet HOFA. He expressed concern that such a law could limit Aruba’s budgetary rights and transfer important financial decisions to an external level.

The statement by the PPA leader forms part of the ongoing debate about financial autonomy, fiscal responsibility, and the role of Parliament in determining Aruba’s economic direction.
