Representatives of the fishing sector in Aruba have expressed deep concern regarding how marine protection decisions and regulations are being implemented. According to Arthur Giel, President of the Hadicurari Foundation, the lack of scientific data and the absence of consultation with the fishing community are leading to measures that severely harm the livelihood of many local families.
In a recent statement, Giel emphasized that regulations should not be presented or passed in Parliament without concrete research and reliable data to support them. “Every time we attend a meeting, the response is that there is no data. To establish rules or laws in this manner, research must be conducted, and experts brought in who can present concrete figures and studies,” Giel stressed.
Direct Impact on Fishermen and Local Traditions
Restrictions and closures of certain marine zones — including areas near Malmok, Rio Barriba, and the coast of Alto Vista — do not only affect the tourism or recreation sectors, but directly impact traditional and elderly fishermen.
These changes create longer distances and harder conditions for those who have depended on this trade all their lives for survival or daily family consumption. Implementing strict measures without proper local analysis restricts access to the sea in the Noord area, severely impacting community customs.
Comparison with the Region and the Role of Local Politics
Giel noted that after participating in consultative meetings abroad (such as in Saba, Sint Maarten, and Sint Eustatius), it is clear that each island and country possesses the autonomy to decide the degree and manner in which protection laws are applied.
Although it is often argued that these laws stem from international treaties or the relationship with the Netherlands, the foundation leader clarified that the responsibility for finding a proper balance between nature conservation and the well-being of the fishing community lies in the hands of local politicians.
A Call for Dialogue and Balance
The fishing sector’s message to the Government and relevant authorities is clear:
• Hold transparent consultations: Sit down at the table with fishermen and stakeholders before making drastic decisions.
• Present data and research: Base any new rules on scientific studies rather than assumptions.
• Seek a balance: Guarantee the protection of natural resources without leaving the fishing community and local economy abandoned.
