The University of Aruba (UA) has officially opened the 2026–2027 academic year, continuing a cherished tradition that celebrates education, leadership and the University’s role in shaping Aruba’s future.
Exactly 38 years ago, the Government of Aruba reached an agreement with the Diocese of Willemstad to use Huize de la Salle, the former living and worship quarters of the Frères. In that same year, as the Frères celebrated 50 years of Huize de la Salle, the University opened its doors with 50 students. Today, 38 years later, UA welcomes 899 enrolled students—a meaningful reflection of the growth and importance of higher education in Aruba.
As tradition dictates, the academic year began with an official ceremony, bringing together distinguished representatives from across Aruba. The University was honored by the presence of Governor of Aruba His Excellency Alfonso Boekhoudt, Prime Minister Mr. Mike Eman, Minister of Kingdom Relations, Education, Youth, Innovation and Sports Her Excellency Gerlien Croes, honorable members of Parliament, President and members of the Board of Trustees, and members of the UA community, including students, lecturers and staff.
Minister Gerlien Croes officially declared the 2026–2027 academic year open. Rector Sue-Ann Lee followed with reflections on leadership, responsibility and resilience, emphasizing that vulnerability is not weakness, but a place where learning, growth and creation can take place. She further reminded the UA community that institutional resilience does not mean that we will never struggle, disagree, make mistakes or fail; rather, it is reflected in how we respond, how we learn, how we adapt, how we take responsibility, and whether we continue to move forward together.
The keynote address was delivered by Aruba’s first Ombudsman, Mrs. Jurima Bryson, under the theme “Knowledge, Justice, and Trust: Building Resilient Institutions for Future Generations.” She reminded the audience that knowledge gives people the ability to understand their rights and hold institutions accountable, while justice calls for fair and proportionate treatment and trust must be earned through consistent and responsible action.
Following the formal ceremony, the celebration continued in the beautiful University garden with catering by Endeavor Catering, creating an opportunity for guests to connect, exchange ideas and celebrate education and community.
