Yesterday afternoon, at the Ceremonial House of the Governor of Aruba, His Excellency the Governor of Aruba, Alfonso Boekhoudt, in the presence of the Council of Ministers of the AVP–Futuro cabinet, administered the oath of office to Mr. M.G.M. (Mildred) Schwengle as Minister Plenipotentiary to the Netherlands. With this appointment, Aruba strengthens its strategic representation within the Kingdom and its presence in Europe.
Mildred G.M. Schwengle, LLM, is a legal expert with extensive experience in constitutional law, international public law, governance (both public and private), financing, and high-level negotiations. Schwengle studied Dutch Law at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen (now Radboud University Nijmegen) between 1984 and 1989.
Her professional career began at the Public Prosecution Service as Deputy Public Prosecutor (1990–1992), and later as a court clerk at the Court of First Instance of Aruba (1992–1994). In 1994, Schwengle became a lawyer, and from 1996 to 2017 she was a partner at HBN Law, serving clients in Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, and Saba.
Between 2017 and 2023, Schwengle held the prestigious position of member of the Council of State of the Kingdom in the Netherlands, advising the Kingdom’s government on legislation, decrees, and international treaties, with a particular focus on relations within the Kingdom.
In addition to her institutional experience, Schwengle has served several times as lead counsel in major financing projects, privatization of pension funds, and international acquisitions involving multi-million interests. Currently, Schwengle is leading negotiations within the Kingdom on sustainable public finances and financial supervision on behalf of the Government of Aruba.
With a career characterized by leadership, integrity, and legal expertise, Milly Schwengle possesses a unique combination of public and private sector experience. The Government of Aruba expresses its full confidence that Schwengle will represent Aruba’s interests with dignity, responsibility, and strategic vision in the Netherlands and within the Kingdom.
The appointment of Schwengle as Minister Plenipotentiary marks a firm step in strengthening Aruba’s position within the Kingdom, with emphasis on cooperation, dialogue, and the defense of national interests.
