the Public Entity of Bonaire, in collaboration with the judicial chain, organized a “Compass” meeting for youth who are considered vulnerable or at risk due to long-term school absenteeism, dropping out of school, and/or contact with the justice system. The meeting took place at Jong Bonaire and brought together youth, parents, and professionals to address the prevention of firearm violence among young people.
The focus of the Compass meeting was to provide perspective and create an alternative path for youth who are at risk of slipping into crime and violence. Under the slogan “From Vulnerable to Perspective,” discussions were held with the youth and their parents regarding responsibility, safety, future possibilities, and making positive choices.
During the meeting, Island Governor (Gezaghebber) John Soliano encouraged and motivated the youth to make positive choices for their future. “We can do a lot for you, but the final decision lies with you as well. You can choose to follow the right path,” the Governor stated.
Additionally, two individuals with firsthand experience (school drop-outs) and two community police officers shared their personal stories and experiences with the audience. During this, attention was drawn to the consequences of violence and crime, but also to the importance of guidance, support, and opportunities for change. Plenchi di Trabou (the Job Center) also provided the youth with advice regarding job and study opportunities during the Compass meeting.
First, discussions were held with the youth and their parents. Afterward, a multidisciplinary care team engaged in conversation with those present. The team was on hand to offer immediate, appropriate help and guidance to youth in need of support. In total, twenty-two young people registered for this program. During the Compass meeting, data from these youths was collected. Following the meeting, the next steps to support these young people in breaking negative patterns and creating new opportunities for their future will be discussed alongside the involved organizations.
With this joint approach, the Public Entity of Bonaire, the Directorate of Community and Care, and the involved partners — FORMA, SGB, Akseso, Zorg en Veiligheidshuis, KPCN (community police), and the Guardianship Board (Voogdijraad) — aim to contribute to the prevention of firearm violence among youth and invest in a safer future for Bonaire.
