Kingdom Act HOFA and its impact on Aruba autonomy is devastating

Hofa 1

Today march,19,2026  in Parliament, a labor union bloc presented a detailed explanation regarding the possible consequences of the so-called Kingdom Act HOFA for Aruba. The law could have serious implications for the autonomy and decision-making power of the Parliament of Aruba. Parliamentarians would lose their authority, meaning the people would also lose their voice.

One of the central points in the discussion is the concern that, with the implementation of the Kingdom Act HOFA, the role of Parliament would be weakened. Important decisions, especially regarding public finances, could be influenced or even made outside of Aruba if the Kingdom Act HOFA is accepted. The Dutch House of Representatives could gain greater influence over how Aruba manages and spends its resources, leaving Aruba without a voice.

On the other hand, Ministers Gerlien Croes, Geoffrey Wever, and Mike Eman have repeatedly stated that the Kingdom Act HOFA is beneficial for Aruba. According to them, the law offers greater financial stability and guarantees for the country’s future, which critics argue does not align with reality.

However, the opposition and union representatives are questioning this position. They argue that there is a significant difference between what the government presents and what they perceive as reality. According to them, the law does not necessarily serve Aruba’s interests and could result in a reduction of the right to self-determination.

There has also been criticism directed at the governing coalition AVP–FUTURO. According to the opposition, these parties do not fully acknowledge the potential impact of the law. They warn that accepting the Kingdom Act HOFA could limit the influence of elected representatives, thereby reducing the strength of the democratic process.

The debate surrounding the Kingdom Act HOFA remains an important and sensitive issue in Aruban politics. It is expected that in the coming period, the discussion will intensify, with both supporters and opponents continuing to present their arguments to the public and in Parliament
