The annual recognition ceremony at the University of Aruba (UA) honored its most outstanding students, highlighting their excellent research and strong connection with the local community. The awards, presented in collaboration with prominent companies, showcase the high level of academic work being produced and the immediate value it brings to Aruban businesses and society.
The university proudly emphasizes its cooperative model: each award-winning student is selected by their faculty in partnership with the sponsoring company. This unique collaboration ensures that the research is not only academically rigorous but also directly relevant to the needs of the business community, creating a seamless integration of high local talent into the professional workforce.
Celebrating Achievement and Community Focus
The ceremony placed a spotlight on students whose theses addressed crucial issues across various fields:
FHTMS (Hospitality and Tourism):
Laurenne Croes was honored for her timely study, “Between Taboos and Trust: Factors Associated with Parental Willingness to Support Sex Education in Schools in Aruba.”
Her supervisor, Dr. Rosabelle Illis, noted that Laurenne’s work went beyond traditional tourism themes, encouraging significant public engagement and discussion on an essential social issue. Laurenne completed her internship at Cas Bon Development Group and now works as an Executive Assistant. Her award was proudly sponsored by the Aruba Tourism Authority.
FEF (Finance and Economics):
The award recognizes the dedication and meticulous work of K.D., whose thesis, “A Process Analysis of Accounts Receivable at the Aruba Chamber of Commerce and Industry,” offered practical solutions for improving operations.
Her supervisor praised her respectful nature and insightful, deep questions. Ernst & Young and Pelican Adventures generously sponsored this award.
SWD (Social Work & Development):
Rose-Anne Winklaar received the award for her research, “Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions of Parents Regarding Child Risk Factors for Children Aged 0–5 at Carnival Events in Aruba.”
A dedicated mother and lifelong educator, Rose-Anne embodies the spirit of the SWD program through her commitment to social justice and her ongoing work at the Departamento di Integracion y Maneho di Stranhero.
Her award was sponsored by Setar.
UA is extremely proud to announce that Rose-Anne’s thesis has been accepted for publication in the Caribbean Languages and Culture Volumes, edited by Dr. Nick Faraclas—an extraordinary accomplishment for a recent graduate.

By creating a functional framework for integrating Papiamento into AI applications, Joel contributed to cultural preservation and equal access in healthcare. His work was sponsored by Amsterdam Manor.
Acknowledging Mentorship
The university extends heartfelt gratitude to all thesis supervisors, whose exceptional guidance was instrumental in leading students to these high levels of academic achievement.
These awards powerfully remind us that investing in local education and building strong partnerships with industry are key to forging an innovative and vibrant future for Aruba.
Appreciation
On behalf of the entire University of Aruba community, we express our sincerest appreciation for your invaluable support of the annual Student Thesis Awards.
Your partnership is the foundation of this recognition and reflects the strong bond between our academic programs and the success of Aruba’s business community.
The celebration itself was truly memorable—with a warm welcome from Rector Sue-Ann Lee, an inspiring speech by the Chair of the Supervisory Board, delicious snacks provided by Stichting Trampoline, and vibrant local steelpan music by Sound of Steel.
We were delighted to thank and recognize all our generous partners personally during the program.
This year, the representatives of Aruba’s business community—Setar, Aruba Tourism Authority, Ernst & Young, Pelican Adventures, RBC, the Bar Association of Aruba, and Amsterdam Manor—played a crucial role in evaluating and celebrating the outstanding work of our graduates.
UA also thanks Ms. Clemente Eugene, who delighted all students and guests with a beautiful poem on behalf of The Inquiry.
