MEP Qualifies AVP–FUTURO government note change as unconstitutional

The faction of the Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP) has strongly criticized a change to a note presented by the AVP–FUTURO government, qualifying the action as unconstitutional and harmful to Aruba’s democracy.

According to MEP, ministers of the coalition government introduced a change to a law after Parliament had already approved the legislation the previous week. The change resulted in the elimination of an amendment presented by parliamentarian Mike de Meza of AVP, a proposal that had previously been approved by a parliamentary majority.

The MEP faction indicated that the change is perceived as an attempt to undermine a fellow parliamentarian and represents a political practice that is unhealthy for a democratic system. For this reason, MEP could not agree with the government’s manner of acting and, consequently, did not vote in favor of the 2026 Budget.

According to the MEP faction leader in Parliament, during the debates, a negative attitude was observed not only from the Prime Minister but also from the entire ruling coalition. The leader noted that the tone of the debates reflected tension and confrontation.

MEP warned that the consequences of these decisions and political practices could eventually affect the people of Aruba, who would experience the impact of what they described as a negative political climate.
