Minister of the Primary Sector, Mr. Geoffrey Wever, held a constructive meeting with the Pro Cunukeronan Arubiano Commission, led by Mr. Jair Britten. During the meeting, the main challenges faced daily by traditional farmers and livestock breeders in their efforts to feed Aruba were discussed.
The commission represents a broad group of local producers who work with passion and dedication to keep Aruba’s agricultural traditions alive. During the meeting, the commission members openly shared the obstacles currently limiting the sector’s growth, including:
– The need for better protection of local products against cheap imports;
– Access to affordable water for agriculture and livestock farming;
– High costs of animal feed;
– The need for improved collaboration with Santa Rosa (DLVV);
– Outbreaks of animal diseases, lack of veterinary support, and high medicine prices;
– Lack of new genetics to improve local livestock breeds;
– The need for a central and permanent location where farmers and livestock breeders can sell their products directly to the community;
– And not least, the serious issue of stray dogs causing damage to livestock.
Minister Wever attentively listened to the concerns and ideas presented by the commission and emphasized the essential role this group plays in Aruba’s broader transition toward a sustainable and resilient primary sector.
“Today we didn’t just talk — we truly listened.
Our farmers clearly pointed out where the problems lie. Now it’s up to us to, together with them, implement concrete solutions. No more studies — but real, effective action,” said Minister Wever.
Based on the issues discussed, the ministry will work closely with the Pro Cunukeronan Arubiano Commission and relevant partners to implement concrete actions aimed not at studies or analyses, but at practical and effective measures to help the sector grow, modernize, and prepare for the future.
This meeting marks an important starting point for closer collaboration between the government and farmers, with a shared goal of strengthening local production, increasing food security, and preserving Aruba’s agricultural heritage.
“The cunukero (farmer) is central to our efforts to sustain a strong and independent Aruba. The government is committed to working with them to ensure that our traditional agriculture continues to flourish — in a sustainable and modern way,” Minister Wever concluded.
The meeting with the Pro Cunukeronan Arubiano Commission is part of the AVP–FUTURO 2025–2028 Government Program, which focuses on strengthening the primary sector, food security, and Aruba’s economic development.
Under Minister Wever’s leadership, the ministry continues to work toward creating a modern and productive agricultural ecosystem, where collaboration, innovation, and sustainability go hand in hand to ensure well-being for Aruba and its citizens.
