Over the weekend, a group of young people successfully participated in the Gang di Arte percussion bootcamp. During three intensive days, participants were introduced to various aspects of percussion. They learned the basics of drumming and deepened their knowledge of rhythmic structures and different techniques. The weekend concluded with a performance for family and friends, where the participants showcased everything they had learned. According to project leader Damari Alonzo, the bootcamp marked an important first step in the group’s development.
The bootcamp was organized by the ACE Foundation in collaboration with Fundashon Konstrui Awor i Mañan (KAIM), the Public Entity of Bonaire, and Divi Flamingo. Under the guidance of Dr. Sandy Hato, who brings years of experience and knowledge from the percussion world, the participants received both theoretical and practical lessons. Hato was supported by coaches who are also active in the percussion sector and who shared their expertise and insights with the youth.
“I am very satisfied with how enthusiastic the children were. Parents, keep supporting them because they have great passion and a lot of talent. To those who made this weekend possible, keep providing your support because the children want this and are genuinely interested,” Sandy Hato stated during the final evening.
On the first day, the focus was on getting to know one another and an introduction to percussion. On the second day, the group worked on rhythmic structures, deepening their techniques, and preparing for the final showcase. The final day focused on rehearsals, practice, and the closing performance.
Project leader Damari Alonzo noted that following the bootcamp, the group will continue to develop their skills: “The real work begins now. The group will focus on perfecting what they have learned and continuing to expand their knowledge. Once they are ready, there will also be public performances.” The ACE Foundation will keep the community informed about future activities and performances by the group.
