In an atmosphere filled with respect, reflection, and cultural celebration, the National Platform for Slavery Heritage Aruba (PENHSA), together with Stichting Rancho, We Culture, and the Committee for the Commemoration of the Slavery Past, commemorated National Emancipation Day. This historic date on July 1st, officially declared a national holiday by Prime Minister Mike Eman, brought our community together to honor our ancestors and reflect on the history of slavery and the value of freedom.
Prime Minister Mike Eman was present during the activity, which began with a commemorative march through the streets of the Village and culminated at Carnival Village. Together with community members and various organizations, he participated in the act of paying homage to the people who suffered during the period of slavery. After the march, the main celebration continued at Carnival Village with a varied cultural program. The public enjoyed various dance performances, poetry, tambu groups, music, and there were also various stands with local food and even some dishes inspired by African traditions.
This year’s commemoration focused on remembering the past, honoring our ancestors, and strengthening knowledge of an important part of Aruba’s history, promoting respect, equality, and historical awareness within our community.
