Over the weekend, the first steps toward the revitalization of the Aruban Patriotic Center (PPA) formally began. Party members and supporters gathered to start intensive work, rolling up their sleeves to prepare the center for the upcoming stages ahead.
Strategically located in San Nicolas, the party center aims not only to become a meeting point of and for the people of San Nicolas, but also to bring the entire population of Aruba together at an important stage of development for our island. With these initial moves, the organization seeks to reinforce its presence and commitment to the district east of the bridge and to the entire country.
A historical legacy of progress and inclusion
This initiative is not merely the start of a building’s reconstruction, but the rebirth of a party with a deep history in the development of Aruba. Founded in 1949 by visionary leaders such as Juancho Irausquin, PPA is the second oldest active political party in our country.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, PPA was the dominant political force driving high-impact socioeconomic projects, particularly strengthening the San Nicolas community and giving a voice to the workforce and all sectors of Aruban society. Throughout its history, the party was a pioneer in social inclusion, marking historical milestones such as the appointment of Ernesto Petronia as the first Aruban to become Prime Minister of the Netherlands Antilles, the creation of the economic development fund (FND), and opening political and ministerial opportunities for women at a time when this was rare.
