Experts will illustrate the impact of climate change on life on the islands The University of Aruba and the University of Prince Edward Island will jointly host the second international conference on Small Island States and Subnational Island Hurricanes – Turning the tide: Climate Change, Social Change and Islandness.
The three-day conference, October 23 to 26 is an extremely interesting event, which includes presentations by several world-renowned speakers and experts will take place at the University of Aruba. It is a unique opportunity to become familiar with the latest scientific insights and discussions on climate change and social change in the island context and to interact personally with researchers.
Islands are on the front lines of climate change. With their close proximity to oceans, they are prone to experience surface loss due to rising sea levels and erosion. The effects of extreme weather events and changes in weather patterns, in addition to increases in both land and sea temperatures, impact life and are often catastrophic. But what about the social change on the islands, because of climate change? How do the effects of climate change impact the islanders, how does the island function? This interdisciplinary conference proposes to explore the theme of climate change and social change on islands through presentations by speakers from the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific region.
The conference will consist of several parallel sessions, interactive sessions and debates. The most eye-catching parts of the program are the presentation of four newly renamed talks, which are at the helm of research on climate change and social change in the island context.
