Important Firm Energy Capacity for the Development of Renewable Energy
In August 2026, WEB Aruba will be able to rely on an expansion of its firm energy capacity by 36 MW, reaching a total of approximately 250 MW. On Monday, November 17, the official handover took place of the main foundations and radiators for the expansion of WEB’s RECIP-3 power plant. The handover occurred in the presence of the Minister responsible for Energy, Mr. Arthur Dowers, who witnessed the signing of the “handing over certificate” between WEB and Wärtsilä Finland Oy.
The realization of the RECIP-3 expansion is very important and necessary for WEB’s production process — not only to limit and mitigate power interruptions but also to support the transition towards integrating renewable energy. With stable and reliable firm capacity, wind energy, solar energy, and battery storage can be used much more effectively. Once the expansion is completed, it will replace the “mobile” plant that has been in operation since August 2024.
The RECIP-3 expansion is progressing in different phases. The handover of the main foundations and radiators is the first milestone of the project, which was completed in record time. As WEB Aruba has communicated on several occasions, there has been a substantial increase in energy demand due to higher temperatures and growing tourism. This development has put pressure on WEB’s power plants since mid-2023. The RECIP-3 expansion forms part of the strategic plan to continue meeting the increasing demand.
With the RECIP-3 expansion, combined with the upcoming renewable energy projects including storage, the capacity will be sufficient to meet energy demand up to 2031 — for which engine installations will be used.
During the ceremony, WEB CEO Alfredo Koolman expressed that there is a strong collective spirit among the stakeholders to achieve the ambitious target of 50% renewable energy. With more clarity recently on the pathway to realizing wind, solar, and battery energy projects, the goal is realistic. The recent significant financial contribution pledged by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy for 2025 and the coming years will certainly help in this.
