AVP MP Ing. Carlos A. Bermudez Requests Urgent Attention for Rooi Afo Bridge

Parlamentario Ing. Carlos A. Bermudez

During the parliamentary debate on the National Ordinance for the Aruba Investment and Development Fund (known as the Lv AIOF), Member of Parliament Ing. Carlos A. Bermudez submitted a motion calling on the AVP-FUTURO Cabinet to provide urgent attention to the current state of the Rooi Afo bridge.

According to Bermudez, this bridge is of vital importance for the mobility of citizens in the areas of Rooi Afo, Paradera, and Sero Preto, as well as for many other daily commuters who rely on this route. Furthermore, the bridge is situated in an area home to various commercial enterprises, meaning its prolonged closure impacts not only traffic flow but also the social and economic wellbeing of the entire neighborhood.

Key Timeline & Current Status
The Closure: The Rooi Afo bridge was closed on February 11, 2025, under the previous administration. Since then, the closure has caused ongoing inconvenience and frustration for residents, motorists, and local business owners.

Technical Progress: MP Bermudez approached the Minister of Infrastructure and the Department of Public Works (DOW) to obtain a clear overview of the required works and budget.

The Process: DOW has already conducted preliminary studies and finalized the necessary engineering designs. DOW is currently finalizing a project dossier for submission to the evaluation committee, as legally required. Once approved, the Council of Ministers can greenlight the funds to start reconstruction and reopen the bridge.

Funding and Timeline Proposals
Bermudez is calling on the AVP-FUTURO Cabinet to evaluate the possibility of allocating the necessary funds to deliver a concrete solution within the remaining months of 2026. If this proves impossible, the MP demands that the Rooi Afo bridge be given absolute priority in the 2027 national budget.

“I completely understand the pain and frustration of those who normally rely on this bridge. At the same time, I ask the community to remain patient while we continue working step by step to reach a definitive solution,” Bermudez stated.

The Member of Parliament reaffirmed his commitment to monitoring this case closely and working hand-in-hand with the relevant authorities to resolve the issue for the residents of Rooi Afo and all affected commuters.

“Step by step, with patience, positivity, determination, and political will, we will achieve a solution,” Bermudez concluded.
