The Public Entity Bonaire invites the community of Bonaire to participate in the Commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. During this evening, we will reflect on an important moment in history and pay tribute to the strength, dignity, and heritage of the people who lived under the system of slavery.
The program will take place from 17:30 to 21:00 at the Executive Council parking lot. It begins at 17:30 and is dedicated to commemoration and cultural expression. There will be speeches and moments of reflection, followed by the official commemoration ceremony featuring a minute of silence and the laying of wreaths. In addition, there will be cultural contributions. Through music, art, and poetry, we will reflect on the meaning of freedom, how our Bonairean ancestors fought for this freedom, and what its impact is on our current society.
Visitors are requested to take into account the current traffic and parking regulations. Please park only in the designated areas. This is necessary to ensure the commemoration can take place in a safe and orderly manner and to avoid blocking roads and walkways.
On July 1, 2026, we conclude a successful Emancipation Month. Let us draw strength from all the activities that took place during Emancipation Month to continue building a bright and equal future together. The Public Entity Bonaire, together with our local partner Mangazina di Rei, invites all residents to reflect on the meaning of freedom, equality, and connection, and to commemorate this important day together.
Emancipation Month was made possible with the support of the Public Entity Bonaire, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, and the Commemoration of the History of Slavery Committee.
