Politicians must be held accountable for the extremely high WEB electricity bills on Bonaire

Los Politicos Deben Ser Responsables Por Las Cuentas Extremadamente Altas De Electricidad De Web En Bonaire

We agree with Aimed 100% and he is right to raise his voice. We give our full support to the position he expressed during the radio brunch program on August 19, 2026, regarding the unbearable electricity bills that the people of Bonaire are facing.

Our politicians must be held accountable. The continuous rise in electricity costs has reached a point where many working people simply cannot survive anymore. People work every day, pay rent, buy food that is becoming more expensive, take care of their children and elderly family members, and then they receive electricity bills that eat up a considerable part of their income.

This is not just about another electricity bill. It is about whether working families can still afford to live on Bonaire.

Bonaire has nine Island Council members and three deputies who must represent the interests and basic needs of the people. They must be held politically accountable for what they do — or do not do — to address this crisis.

Where is the urgent action? Access to adequate and affordable energy is recognized as essential for the realization of existing human rights and for maintaining a dignified standard of living. Electricity is not a luxury; it is a basic necessity of modern life. Families depend on it for refrigeration, cooking, light, ventilation, air conditioning, education, health, communication, and the daily functioning of their homes. However, ordinary inhabitants of Bonaire are increasingly facing WEB electricity bills that they simply cannot pay, putting even more pressure on families who are already struggling with the high cost of living.

As Aimed correctly asked the politicians during the brunch program: “Are politicians waiting to play politics with the needs of the people? Now that elections are coming up, are they going to use this for the election campaign?”

The suffering and difficulties of the people should never become an instrument for an election campaign. Politicians should not wait until the elections are close to suddenly start talking about the problems that families are struggling with month after month.

The nine Island Council members and three deputies must answer the people directly: Why have they allowed this situation to reach such a critical point just a few months before the elections?
