Member of Parliament Eduard Pieters: “Government bases its decision on a report Parliament itself has not seen. Where is the transparency?”

Gobierno Ta Basa Su Decision Riba Un Rapport Cu Parlamento Mes No A Mira. Unda E Transparencia Ta

It is striking that the Government continues to refer to an economic report to support its position on raising the minimum wage. However, according to Member of Parliament Eduard Pieters (PPA), the Parliament of Aruba has not yet received this famous document, which should allow for an independent evaluation of the decision. During a press conference, Pieters questioned the lack of information and emphasized the Government’s responsibility to be accountable to Parliament.

“If there is a study, present the study”

Pieters mentioned an economic report that, according to his statement, the Government commissioned from the Economisch Bureau van Amsterdam. He questions why the document has not yet been shared with Parliament, despite being referenced in public debate. “How can we evaluate a plan if we do not know the analysis, the recommendations, and the possible consequences?” For Pieters, a general reference to a study is not enough to serve as the foundation for an economic decision of such magnitude.

Parliament cannot exercise oversight without information

As a member of Parliament, Pieters considers it essential that the representatives of the people have access to relevant documentation. He maintains that Parliament must be able to examine the alleged alternative scenarios and the possible effects on workers and businesses. “Government cannot ask for trust while missing the necessary information to oversee its decision!”

“Where is the implementation plan?”

Pieters also questions whether there is a sufficiently detailed plan to implement the increase. According to Pieters, the debate must include the method of implementation, consultation with stakeholders, and economic risk assessment. For the PPA, the existence of a report does not replace the Government’s obligation to explain its decisions.

Transparency is not a favor to Parliament

Pieters emphasizes that the PPA supports a responsible increase in the minimum wage, but demands that the process be transparent and verifiable. “We are not asking for information to delay a decision. We are asking for information so that we can fulfill our responsibility as Parliament.”

The question Pieters poses is simple: if the Government is convinced that its decision has a solid economic basis, why does Parliament still lack the necessary documents to evaluate it as well?
