Aruba is not experiencing significant population growth, but the number of cars on the island continues to rise steadily. According to information from the Department of Taxes (DIMP), it is expected that before the end of the year, the total number of registered vehicles will reach 100,000.
DIMP spokesperson Merverly Romano Kelly indicated that this is a considerable figure given that Aruba is a small country. She expressed concern about the growth rate in the number of vehicles on the island.
24% have not yet paid their license plate fees
According to Romano Kelly, 24% of motorists have not yet fulfilled their payment obligation for their license plates. The category with the highest number of overdue payments is license plate category A.
The spokesperson explained that the department continues to monitor the situation and is calling on motorists to keep their documentation and payments in order.
Warning about illegal license plates
DIMP has also issued a warning to the community regarding individuals who are producing license plates similar to official ones. According to Romano Kelly, anyone involved in this type of activity is committing an illegal act. This also applies to those driving with red and white license plates this is not allowed.
The department stated that it is keeping a close watch on these illegal practices and is taking measures against those responsible.
New registrations increasing rapidly
Recent figures show a rapid increase in vehicle registrations. In January, DIMP opened the year with 97,710 registered vehicles. By February, that number had risen to 98,007.
This shows that in just a few weeks, more than 297 new vehicles were added to the national registry, bringing Aruba closer to the historic milestone of 100,000 registered vehicles.
Authorities continue to monitor this development, considering the impact that vehicle growth may have on traffic, infrastructure, and the environment on the island.
