AVP Member of Parliament, Ing. Carlos Bermudez, expressed his satisfaction with the initiative taken by the Minister of Tourism, Transport, Primary Sector, and Culture, Mr. Wendrick Cicilia, to install fish aggregating devices (artificial buoys) at various strategic points at sea. The goal of this project is to attract more fish and strengthen Aruba’s fishing sector.
According to Bermudez, this type of investment represents a concrete step toward supporting a sector of great importance to Aruba. “When there are more opportunities to catch fish, we contribute to a stronger, more productive, and more sustainable industry, which ultimately benefits both our fishermen and our community,” he stated.
Bermudez highlighted that fishing is a profession that demands significant sacrifice, dedication, and perseverance. “Every time a boat sets sail, no one knows for certain how the day will end. There are costs, risks, and a lot of uncertainty. That is why we must appreciate the effort our fishermen make every day to put food on their families’ tables and to supply Aruba with high-quality fresh fish,” he declared.
The MP indicated that consumers always have the freedom to choose whether or not to purchase a product, but he emphasized the importance of understanding the economic reality that fishermen face. “Often, people criticize the price of fish without taking into account the cost of fuel, boat maintenance, equipment, labor hours, and the risks involved with every trip out to sea.”
Bermudez shared that this topic touches him personally. During his youth, he regularly went out to sea with his late father, Dominico “Do” Bermudez—an experience that allowed him to see firsthand the reality, the pride, and the daily challenges that characterize a fisherman’s life.
In the same context, Bermudez appealed to the fishing community to continue strengthening unity and mutual respect, especially during important discussions regarding the future of the sector, such as the Marine Park project. According to the MP, open, respectful, and constructive dialogue is the best path forward to protect both the interests of our fishermen and our environment.
Concluding, Bermudez expressed his gratitude to all fishermen in Aruba for the constant solidarity they demonstrate. “In difficult times, we see how fishermen support and help one another. This spirit of camaraderie and mutual support is a value we must continue to cultivate. Together, we are stronger.”
