The MAN-PIN Faction visited SDK to assess the situation

The MAN-PIN faction in Parliament has expressed its deep concern regarding the state of various facilities at the Curaçao Sports Center (SDK) and has addressed a letter with questions and requests to the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Mr. Sithree van Heydoorn.

In recent years, the Government has invested in repairing various sports fields across Curaçao. MAN-PIN considers this a positive development, as sports contribute to a healthy lifestyle and the development of our children and youth. However, the most important sports center on our island, SDK, continues to face serious issues with maintenance, safety, and modernization.

SDK is the heart of sports in Curaçao. Thousands of athletes, schools, sports federations, and organizations use these facilities throughout the year. Nevertheless, facilities such as the athletics track, the Enith Brigitha swimming pool, the Errol Rooi sports hall, and the football stadium show clear signs of deterioration and lack of maintenance.

The MAN-PIN faction recalls that last year it was announced that the athletics track, which previously served as a venue for international events like the CARIFTA Games, would be repaired. To date, there is no clear information regarding the progress or execution of the project.

According to the MAN-PIN faction, the current situation affects not only high-level athletes but also schools, sports federations, and organizations that promote sports within our community. Furthermore, people with disabilities use these facilities for training and preparation for international competitions such as the Special Olympics.

“A country that believes in sports must invest in sports facilities that are safe, modern, and well-maintained. SDK cannot be left behind,” stated the MAN-PIN faction.

For these reasons, MAN-PIN is requesting the Government to provide clarity on the status of the various rehabilitation projects and to concretely repair and modernize the SDK facilities.
