On Betico Croes Day, another protest also took place, this time organized by a group of environmental activists. The group gathered to express their support for Bonaire in its struggle for nature conservation and to demand that the Netherlands respect the environment of the Dutch Caribbean islands.
According to the protesters, they oppose forms of development that follow a European model, arguing that the Caribbean cannot be treated or developed in the same way as Europe. They insist that the islands have a unique ecosystem that requires special protection and that development decisions must take the environmental and cultural realities of the region into account.
The decision to hold the protest on Betico Croes Day was not coincidental. According to activist Oriana Wouters, the date was chosen for its historical and symbolic significance, as it represents the struggle for autonomy, respect, and the protection of one’s own identity.
The group hopes that their message will reach governments and relevant authorities, both locally and within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in order to prevent permanent damage to the environment of the Caribbean islands.
The case will take place on January 28, 2026, and people around the world will be able to follow the case and/or the verdict online, completely free of charge.
