Hendrik Tevreden: Government is letting sports project die

Hendrik Tevreden

More than half a million florins in public funds wasting away in containers

What should have been a significant investment in the future of sports in Aruba has now become a clear example of mismanagement and capital destruction. The multifunctional sports project in Santa Cruz, located on the grounds of the Aruba Sport Unie (ASU), is completely stalled while over half a million florins worth of sports equipment remains in containers, deteriorating daily. The opposition is now sounding the alarm and questioning the Minister of Sports on his responsibility for halting the project and the evident deterioration of public investments sitting in these containers.

From Development to Paralysis

The project, located next to the Betico Croes Sports Complex, was intended to strengthen Aruba’s sporting infrastructure. Under the previous government, resources were already assigned and materials purchased. However, the current government decided to halt the project under the guise of an investigation, without providing clear explanations to Parliament or the public. While there is mention of indigenous archaeological finds, the terrain spans over 20,000 $m^2$. It is unrealistic that the entire plot contains such finds. Furthermore, why let the materials rot in containers in the meantime?

Wasting Public Money Without Concern

Who will bear the consequences when the materials are completely ruined—the Minister or ASU? Containers filled with sports equipment are falling into disrepair, and the investment’s value drops every day. According to Tevreden, this is a direct destruction of public funds—the people’s money.

While there is no intention to hinder archaeological preservation, there has been no definitive report or concrete action to excavate these finds after more than ten years. Nor has there been a decision to cordone off specific areas to allow the rest of the land to be used. The fundamental question remains: if this was a serious archaeological matter, how is it possible that the government hasn’t provided clarity all these years?

Who Will Take Responsibility?

The situation raises serious questions about financial and legal accountability. Who is responsible for the fact that equipment paid for with public funds is now rotting? Tevreden indicates that this prolonged paralysis is not just mismanagement but could result in holding the Minister personally liable for the damages caused.

Sports Sector Again a Victim of Political Whims

Aruba has struggled for years with a lack of quality sports facilities. Halting this project not only causes financial damage but directly stunts the development of sports and youth. The essence of the case is simple: if governance is a continuous process, do not let invested money go to waste. Government must protect investments rather than paralyze progress where it is needed most.
