After 18 years of working at the port premises, Marlien Lacle of Nautique and Unique Happy Kiosk stores continues to enjoy connecting with cruise tourists. Visitors sharing stories about their tours, customers returning year after year, and the lively atmosphere make her work feel, in her own words, like “a carnival every day.”
Marlien Lacle attended Cruise Connect 2026 to stay informed about developments in the cruise industry—a sector she loves and in which she has built her business career. The merchant explained that they operate two sales points: a kiosk at Welcome Plaza and a store located further inside the port premises. Their merchandise includes souvenirs, keychains, magnets, hair accessories, and fashion jewelry, including necklaces and rings.
According to Lacle, certain products stand out to passengers. Tourists often tell her that they do not find the same type of hair accessory sets at other ports of call. The positive client feedback brings her great satisfaction. “They say ‘you have a lovely store,’ and they are also very happy to be in Aruba,” she shared.
Tourists return with stories of their experience
For Marlien Lacle, interaction with passengers goes far beyond a transaction. Many stop by before their tours and, upon returning, share how their day in Aruba went. Some go out on UTVs, while others spend their time at the beach. According to the business owner, the feedback upon their return is overwhelmingly positive, especially regarding Aruba’s white sand and clear waters.
“Whenever they come back to the ship, they fall in love with Aruba all over again. They say, ‘No, we are coming back,'” Lacle expressed. She sees that promise come true with repeat customers who return year after year. Some recognize her shop and drop by just to say hello or to find the same products they purchased during a previous visit. “They come visit me as well. I find that very nice,” she said. The relationships she builds with customers are among the most enjoyable parts of her job.
Not every ship brings the same sales volume
Despite her great enthusiasm, Lacle acknowledges that commercial activity varies from ship to ship. On some days, passengers are more interested in walking around and relaxing, perhaps making a small purchase like a magnet. In her experience, the profile and interests of the visitors influence their spending habits. Some ships bring strong commercial movement, while other days are quieter. Nevertheless, her assessment of the port’s overall development remains positive. She noted that the port has grown tremendously over recent years and that daily interactions with visitors continue to energize her work.
“As long as good health lasts”
After 18 years, Marlien Lacle retains her passion for the business and the opportunity to talk with people from all over the world. The variety of encounters and experiences keeps her work engaging. When asked about staying active in the industry, her answer was straightforward: “I love this line of work and the business I run.” And regarding how long she plans to keep going, she concluded with a simple phrase: “As long as good health lasts.”
