On Monday morning, Parliament continued the meeting that the MEP faction had requested more than seven months ago. The intention was for Parliament to receive more information from the government about how the negotiations with the Netherlands were progressing. The surprise was immense when, on August 29th, the government informed Parliament that it had already reached an agreement with the Netherlands and that the Kingdom Council of Ministers had already approved it.
For the MEP faction, this felt like a slap in the face, as all of this occurred without consulting Parliament and — worse — without informing the people about such an important decision. This demonstrates a lack of respect not only for the highest governing body, Parliament, but also for every citizen of Aruba who deserves to be considered when decisions of this magnitude are made. Especially a Kingdom Act like this one, which offers no benefit to Aruba.
Even more regrettable is that during the parliamentary meeting, not a single minister responded or answered questions about the fact that the AVP/Futuro government acted like a “thief in the night,” making such a crucial decision for Aruba without informing anyone. Aruba has never before experienced a government with so little transparency.
It is important for the people of Aruba to recognize what kind of individuals are governing our precious island and to ask themselves:
if this government hid this from us, what else are they hiding — or planning to hide?
