Minister Geoffrey Wever justifies the HOFA law as being good for Aruba, but cannot provide figures

Parlamentario Dangui Oduber

During the meeting discussing the Kingdom Law that the Government of Aruba handed over to the Netherlands without first presenting it to the Aruban Parliament, Member of Parliament Dangui Oduber expressed that this meeting is of great importance to Aruba. He argued that the AVP–FUTURO government has given away the island’s freedom, autonomy, and status aparte — essentially selling Aruba for a small bag of money to carry out projects they personally desire around the island. Indirectly, the AVP–FUTURO government is indebting Aruba in order to invent various projects and spend money that all residents of Aruba will ultimately have to repay.

At the start of the meeting, however, Minister of Finance Geoffrey Wever refused to share important documents relevant to Aruba’s interests. What Member of Parliament Dangui Oduber referred to was the supposed savings Aruba would gain by accepting the Kingdom Law HOFA. Initially, the government mentioned savings of 50 million, then 30 million, later 8 million, and finally only 5 million.

Member of Parliament Dangui Oduber emphasized that the way this process is being handled is unacceptable. He criticized Minister Geoffrey Wever and also the President of Parliament, who, according to him, has created an atmosphere of censorship and dictatorship in the Aruban Parliament since taking office. She allegedly cuts off the microphones of parliamentarians, preventing them from fully expressing their views and revealing the truth about what the AVP–FUTURO government is doing to Aruba.
