Author Giovanni Gijsbertha today presented his new children’s book E misterio di maskarada during a performance by the maskarada group at the home of Governor John Soleana. The book was officially presented to the governor and to several individuals who played an important role in the creation of this special children’s book.
During the presentation, Gijsbertha handed a copy to, among others, Cliff Frans, who served as the inspiration for writing the book.
Maskarada is a unique and valuable tradition deeply rooted in Bonairean culture. This ancient folk practice is an integral part of Bonaire’s cultural identity. With E misterio di maskarada, Gijsbertha makes an important contribution to preserving and passing on this tradition to new generations. By introducing children to maskarada through an exciting story, cultural awareness and appreciation for this special tradition are strengthened.
The bilingual book, written in Dutch and Papiamentu, helps young Bonaireans better understand and cherish their own cultural heritage, which is vital for the continued existence of maskarada as a living tradition.
Official Launch
The official launch of E misterio di maskarada will take place on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 5:30 PM at the Chon Theodora Museum, Kaya Rafaëla 21, in Antriol Pariba. This location was chosen deliberately: it is the traditional endpoint of the maskarada, creating a symbolic link between the book and the living tradition.
Free Distribution in Primary Schools
In collaboration with the project Edukashon Kultural Artistiko di Kalidat (Bonaire Cultural Education), Giovanni Gijsbertha will visit primary schools and the Kolegio Emmy Schermer educational institution on Bonaire on Thursday, January 7, and Friday, January 8. During this tour, all students in grades 7 and 8 will receive a free copy of the book. This initiative ensures that the story of maskarada is widely shared among Bonairean schoolchildren and contributes to structured cultural education in schools.
