In a recent speech, Parliamentarian Edgar Vrolijk expressed his disapproval regarding the change from public meetings to informational meetings in parliament. According to Vrolijk, this measure limits the institution’s authority and stalls the process of making important decisions.
Vrolijk emphasized that this situation creates a problem that does not give the people the answers they deserve, as informational meetings do not offer the same political and legal weight as a public meeting. The parliamentarian argued that if there is a structural problem, the solution must be one that delivers results, rather than a simple “patch-up” (temporary solutions) that keeps recurring the following month.
One of the key points touched upon was the problem of illegal dumping sites around the island. Vrolijk pointed out that this situation continues to cause harm to the community and that the government, instead of implementing lasting solutions, continues to rely on private companies for waste processing, which causes high expenses for the country. He urges prioritizing the strengthening of state-owned enterprises and ensuring fundamental solutions instead of continuing the practice of temporarily covering up the problem.
