Leadership is not just about holding a political office. According to parliamentarian Eduard Pieters, true leadership begins with how a person communicates, works with people, and maintains their values during difficult times. With this message, the leader of the Arubg Patriot Party (PPA) faction participated in a gathering with youth, where representatives of various parliamentary faction leaders shared their experiences and vision regarding leadership and public service.
Concrete meaning of leadership
Pieters stated that the main objective was to inspire the next generation of leaders by sharing some of the principles that guide his daily work as a leader.
“Leadership is very important for our youth. They are the future of Aruba, and the decisions they make tomorrow will determine how our country continues to develop.”
According to Pieters, leadership is defined not solely by authority, but primarily by responsibility. The parliamentarian emphasized that a leader must know how to communicate, build relationships, and be willing to guide positive change in the community. “A leader is not someone who simply gives orders. A leader must know how to listen, communicate, and connect with people. A leader must be able to inspire people to take action, not because they have to, but because they want to.”
Essential qualities of a leader
During his presentation, Pieters highlighted various qualities, skills, and responsibilities that, according to scientific studies, are essential for anyone wanting to occupy a leadership role. Among those mentioned were the importance of effective communication, building human relationships, being an agent of change to alter the status quo, the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances (flexibility), and, above all, maintaining integrity at all times based on one’s ideals and beliefs. “A leader must be flexible,” he said. “You work with people, and every person is different. If you cannot adapt without losing your principles, it will be difficult to guide others.”
Moral compass
However, according to Pieters, the foundation of all leadership is based on something much deeper than technique or experience. “Your norms, your values, your ideals, and your beliefs are your moral compass. That is what will guide you when you have to make difficult decisions.” For the PPA faction leader, especially in a constantly changing world, youth must learn that leadership is not measured by popularity, but by the decisions a person is willing to make under pressure.
Preparation for life
“Your character is what truly determines what kind of leader you will become.” Pieters concluded his meeting with the Youth Parliament by not only referring to the area of politics, but motivating youth to think about their own future, the role they can play in society, and how they can be agents of change.
“We want them to leave here with more knowledge, but also with more self-confidence so they can truly be empowered and be true agents of change. Aruba needs leaders who are prepared, responsible, and have a love for the country.”
According to Pieters, investing in youth leadership is one of the best investments a country can make, because tomorrow’s leaders are shaped by the values they learn today.
