The Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) has issued another alert to the community after detecting a new wave of fraud attempts via SMS and fake phone calls, commonly known as scams. These messages, which appear to be orchestrated and sent from Morocco, attempt to deceive citizens by claiming they have an outstanding traffic fine that must be paid.
This fraudulent scheme has resurfaced, leading dozens of citizens to contact authorities to report the situation. In the morning hours alone, around 40 calls were registered from individuals who received the misleading SMS messages or were contacted by phone.
Fortunately, thanks to the caution and alertness of the public, many citizens immediately recognized that the communication was not legitimate and did not fall into the financial trap.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office emphatically clarifies the official procedure to prevent anyone from falling victim to this type of scam:
Official communication is sent by mail: The OM never contacts citizens via SMS or phone calls to collect traffic fines or demand direct payment. All official notifications from the Public Prosecutor’s Office are sent exclusively via physical letters.
Do not open suspicious links: If you receive an SMS or message asking you to make a payment or click on a link to process a fine transaction, it is 100% fake.
Verify before acting: If you receive one of these messages, ignore the content, do not provide any personal or banking information, and do not make any payments.
Authorities urge all citizens to remain vigilant, ignore these messages, and share this information with family and friends to protect the entire community against this scam network.
