Security in the Caribbean region remains a growing concern for all countries within the Kingdom. According to the President of Parliament of Sint Maarten, Sarah Wescot-Williams, the time has come for decisions discussed within the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) not to remain on paper, but to be translated into concrete action.
At the opening of IPKO 2026, several introductory presentations were delivered. Wescot-Williams indicated that this was necessary, given that there are several new parliamentarians within the delegations. According to her, to achieve substantive debate, it is important that all participants share a common understanding of the historical and structural matters addressed within IPKO.
Geopolitics Increases Pressure on the Region
For Sint Maarten, the topic of security occupies a central position in discussions. The President of Parliament emphasized that recent geopolitical developments in the region and internationally are increasing the vulnerability of small islands.
Given the Caribbean’s strategic position, the islands are not isolated from global tensions, illicit trafficking, or transnational challenges. According to Wescot-Williams, cooperation within the Kingdom must go beyond diplomatic exchanges and focus on practical coordination and rapid response.
From Dialogue to Implementation
Wescot-Williams expressed concern that in recent years many decisions and declarations have been formulated within IPKO without clear follow-up. “We must begin taking real action,” she stated, insisting that the credibility of the platform depends on implementation.
Sint Maarten’s position reflects a broader regional sentiment: the need to strengthen institutional capacity, share strategic information, and formulate joint mechanisms to confront regional threats.
With these statements, Sint Maarten’s leadership is calling for IPKO to become not only a forum for dialogue, but also an effective instrument of policy and coordination within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
