During a recent demonstration of discontent, SEPPA union leader Magali Britto delivered a powerful message directed at Parliament and the AVP-FUTURO government of Aruba. Britto emphasized that the current struggle is centered on a sacred right: the will of a people to decide their own future.
A Firm Position Against the Current Agreement As a representative of the working class, SEPPA Union formally submitted their position in writing to Parliament. The union remains steadfast in its stance that the agreement currently on the table is insufficient to guarantee the well-being and interests of the workers. According to Britto, the prevailing discontent within the community is a clear sign that the path currently being taken is not the correct one.
The People’s Voice Must Be Heard The central point of SEPPA’s discourse is the necessity for governors to come down to earth and listen to what the citizens are asking for. Britto reiterated that “the voice of the people must be heard” and that there must be profound respect for the community’s final wishes. She considers this a fundamental principle of democracy and a basic right that cannot be ignored.
A Call for Awareness and Change The union leader concluded her statement with a call to the entire community of Aruba to “become aware” of the gravity of the situation. According to SEPPA, now is the time to remain alert and push for the necessary changes the country needs. This protest movement serves as a demonstration of unity and the determination of workers not to surrender until their voice receives the value it deserves in the decision-making process regarding the Rijkswet HOFA, which does not have the approval of the Aruban people.
