Shailiny Tromp-Lee: Aruba needs a vision and a concrete long-term plan

Gasolon

The announcement of another fuel price hike confirms a reality that many families in Aruba already feel every day: the cost of living continues to rise while the Government has yet to present any structural and concrete long-term plan.

Effective May 13, 2026:

  • Gasoline will increase from Afl. 2.48 to Afl. 2.65 per liter (+6.9%)
  • Diesel will increase from Afl. 2.47 to Afl. 2.57 per liter (+2.6%)
  • Kerosene will increase to Afl. 3.02 per liter

The Government stated that they are absorbing half of the increase by temporarily lowering the excise tax (accijns). But the main question remains: How long can the Government continue to absorb these increases?

As a Member of Parliament, I am deeply concerned that we are not hearing any clear strategy for 2027. During meetings with the Government, we were assured that water and electricity were “under control,” but official WEB documents received by Parliament show a different reality.

WEB confirms that:

  • 95% of oil consumption for 2026 is hedged;
  • However, starting January 2027, Aruba will be 100% exposed to international prices;
  • And this could force an increase in water and electricity tariffs.

This is a serious warning sign that cannot be ignored. I have sent official questions to the Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and Primary Sector regarding:

  1. The lack of a concrete plan to avoid a “tariff shock” in 2027;
  2. Whether there is a new hedging strategy;
  3. Whether there is a financial buffer;
  4. And how the Government is preparing for a scenario where international prices continue to rise.

My concern is also great regarding our energy security. WEB depends entirely on Heavy Fuel Oil, and the crisis in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz is increasing global risk and volatility. I find it worrying that WEB had to proactively seek confirmation from FMSA to know if Aruba’s energy supply was guaranteed.

Concrete Long-Term Action: Enough with Temporary Reactions

The public deserves transparency and serious preparation, not just a temporary reaction every time the market rises. While the Government says “everything is under control,” their own departments are analyzing rising inflation, bunker surcharge increases, rising oil prices, and growing pressure on the cost of living.

I continue to insist on:

  • ✔️ An economic and energy defense plan;
  • ✔️ Real protection for purchasing power;
  • ✔️ More transparency;
  • ✔️ And honest communication with Parliament and the public.

Our people cannot remain in uncertainty while our citizens’ pockets are already under a lot of pressure. Aruba needs leadership with vision, preparation, and concrete long-term action.
