Political hypocrisy on Betico Day: Words about Status Aparte, actions against autonomy

Minister Gerlien Croes

The public position of Minister Gerlien Croes does not align with the direction the current government is taking, especially regarding the implementation of the Kingdom Act HOFA, a law that represents a weakening of Aruba’s autonomy.

During the commemoration of Betico Croes Day, a national day with deep historical and symbolic meaning for Aruba, several political speeches provoked strong reactions within the community. In particular, the statements made by Minister Gerlien Croes raised serious questions about political coherence and respect for the legacy of Betico Croes.

Criticism has emerged regarding the position Minister Croes publicly expressed about the struggle for Status Aparte, while behind the scenes the current FUTURO party is actively pushing for the implementation of the Kingdom Act HOFA together with Minister Geoffrey Wever. For many citizens, this combination is seen as contradictory and problematic, especially on a day dedicated to Aruba’s autonomy and freedom.

Betico Croes Day should be a moment of national reflection, in which the people honor the historic struggle for self-determination. In this context, the speech of Prime Minister Mike Eman during the morning ceremony was received positively, as he emphasized the need for national unity and clearly stated that the AVP is against the Kingdom Act HOFA—a position he has consistently maintained throughout his political campaign. However, it appears that the FUTURO party has changed its stance overnight, while at the same time sending a conflicting message on Betico Day.

Nevertheless, critics point out that the current coalition, primarily the FUTURO party, has contributed to a climate of political division and decisions that, according to them, prioritize financial interests over the general well-being of the country. The perception is that money comes first for FUTURO, rather than the country as a whole. The main concern is that some young political leaders lack sufficient historical sensitivity and a deep commitment to Aruba’s future.

Voters who placed their trust in the current coalition are being called upon to evaluate the direction the country is taking and the difference between political promises and practical actions. Especially on a symbolic day such as Betico Croes Day, the people expect clarity, respect, and sincerity.

The debate surrounding the Kingdom Act HOFA, autonomy, and the relationship with the Netherlands continues to be a central theme in Aruban politics. The people of Aruba, with a strong historical awareness, are watching closely and do not rule out expressing their opinion clearly in the near future. The discussion about Status Aparte and the Kingdom Act HOFA caused controversy on Betico Croes Day and highlights a path Aruba does not wish to follow—yet Ministers Gerlien Croes and Geoffrey Wever continue to persist on a course that the people of Aruba have vocally rejected through their signatures opposing the Kingdom Act HOFA.
