Croes pointed out that since the beginning of 2026, two key facts are marking the course of the current administration: Mike Eman’s announcement that he will retire this coming September to make way for Wendrick Cicilia as leader of the AVP, and the surprise decision, without notifying his Vice Prime Minister Gerlien Croes, to change the position of Prime Minister starting January 1, 2027.
Internal Reorganization and the Change of Leadership in AVP Croes remarked that, while Aruba is debating issues of great national importance such as the HOFA and oil developments, the leadership changes in the AVP are causing a lot of internal tension. According to the MP, the announcement of Mike Eman’s retirement after 18 months in power is perceived by the people as a lack of commitment and a surrender of our autonomy to the Netherlands.
Inside the AVP, the tendency is for Wendrick Cicilia to assume the party leadership temporarily, but without taking the Prime Minister position immediately due to a lack of experience. Instead, the proposal is for Minister Arthur Dowers to become the next Prime Minister starting January 1, 2027, an idea that Dowers has received with enthusiasm before concluding his political career. As part of this reorganization, it is also proposed that Ryçond Candelaria take over the Justice portfolio.

On the one hand, Marlon Sneek is claiming a cabinet position based on his loyalty and trajectory since 2010, arguing that he has borne a high political cost to defend the party in its most difficult and controversial moments.
On the other hand, Croes noted the position of MP Heyliger, who also aspires to enter the cabinet. Heyliger recalled the previous discussion when “Baba” Herdé was appointed as a minister without having participated in the election.
