When analyzing Aruba’s political and socio-economic development, there are key moments that redefine the country’s course. To understand the present and future of our community, it is essential to delve into history that is not always told with the depth it deserves, where unexpected answers pave the way for us to rediscover the foundations of our democracy.

Within this framework of reflection and vision for the future, the Aruban Patriotic Party (PPA) is officially commemorating 77 years of existence.

History, Present, and Future

Today, the PPA is undergoing a decisive stage of reactivation. After more than seven decades of trajectory in the political arena, the party is in a process of renewal and rebuilding its center, maintaining a clear vision to continue its contribution to Aruba’s progress and development. To project the organization’s future, it is essential to recognize the value of its history and the pioneers who established its foundations.

October 23, 1949: The Date That Shaped Aruba’s Politics and Economy

When speaking of the island’s political and financial foundation, the name of Juan Enrique “Juancho” Yrausquin (1904–1962) remains an indispensable historical reference. On October 23, 1949, Juancho Yrausquin, together with a group of visionary leaders and citizens, founded the Aruban Patriotic Party (PPA) following the split from the AVP. This event introduced a new political force that played a decisive role in the governance and socio-economic structure of the Antilles and Aruba for many decades.

Financial Leadership and Vision for the Country

Before entering public and political life, Yrausquin was a finance professional. He served as the first director of the first commercial bank in Aruba and later played a key role as co-founder and director of Aruba Bank. This experience allowed him to establish a foundation of financial stability for the island during a crucial transition period.

Later on, in his capacity as Minister of Finance of the Netherlands Antilles, Yrausquin promoted policies focused on hard work, stability, and sustainable economic growth for the entire community. His legacy remains an integral part of Aruba’s modern history.

Around this commemoration, the organization calls upon the community to reflect on the importance of keeping the history and example of past leaders alive in the collective memory, as a guide for the challenges of today’s and tomorrow’s Aruba.

Today, the PPA is going through its reactivation process where, after 77 years, it is undergoing a renewal and construction of its center, with a clear vision to move Aruba forward.
