Memoria Ancestral, the groundbreaking documentary exploring Aruba’s
slavery ancestry and colonial past, has been officially selected for the Curaçao International
Film Festival, taking place from April 9-13, 2025. This selection marks a significant milestone
for Aruban storytelling, bringing historical and personal narratives to an international stage.
Commissioned by Cas di Cultura and created by artists Natusha Croes, Layzima Emerencia,
and Darwin Winklaar, Memoria Ancestral is a multidisciplinary production that delves into the
lasting influence of colonialism, particularly the Afro-Indigenous enslavement that shaped
Aruba’s history. Developed in collaboration with Aruban institutions, scholars, and
experience experts, the documentary is a powerful reflection on identity, resilience, and
cultural heritage.
“We are honored that Memoria Ancestral has been chosen for the Curaçao International Film
Festival,” said Cas di Cultura. “This recognition highlights the importance of revisiting our past
and amplifying the voices that have long been unheard.”
The documentary was made possible through the generous support of Mondriaan Fonds and
DNB Fonds Caribisch Deel, emphasizing the value of artistic and historical preservation in the
Caribbean.
The Curaçao International Film Festival will take place from April 9-13, 2025, providing an
