On November 6, Aruba commemorates 81 years since Hubertus “Boy” Ecury was executed in the Netherlands, where he was part of the Dutch resistance during the Second World War.
Boy Ecury symbolizes all Aruban heroes who fought for freedom during this crucial period in world history. His courage and sacrifice continue to inspire our people to defend freedom and human dignity.
Born in Aruba on April 23, 1922, Boy grew up in a family grounded in strong values of faith, hard work, and justice. While studying in the Netherlands, he was inspired to stand up for the principles of freedom and humanity.
During the Second World War, Boy joined the Dutch resistance, demonstrating great bravery and determination.
His participation in the resistance ultimately cost him his life: Boy was betrayed and executed on November 6, 1944, in Haaren, the Netherlands, for his unwavering stance in the fight against oppression and injustice. He was only 22 years old.
The Department of Culture Aruba (DCA) honors Boy Ecury as a national hero whose legacy continues to inspire new generations to defend freedom, integrity, and justice. His life serves as a powerful reminder that even in times of fear and danger, courage and hope can prevail.
Boy Ecury stands as a testament to Aruban pride and a universal example of love for freedom and humanity.
The Department of Culture Aruba invites the Aruban community to continue honoring and remembering the legacy of Boy Ecury — a hero who gave his life for freedom and humanity.
