As of February 14, 2012, it is prohibited in Bonaire to bring dogs to certain beaches and coastal areas or to allow them to roam freely. This measure is intended to protect both visitors and nature.
Whenever more people bring their dogs to the beach, it can create risks for other beachgoers. To prevent accidents and incidents such as bites, certain beaches and coastal areas have restrictions in place. In these locations, people are not allowed to bring dogs, even if they are leashed.
The restriction also contributes to the protection of nature. Dogs may disturb turtle nests or vulnerable natural areas, such as Pekelmeer, which is protected at the international level. In addition, dog feces on beaches can create hygiene issues for both people and the environment.
To inform visitors, the government has installed signs on the beaches and coastal areas in question. These signs clearly indicate where the restrictions apply. The prohibition applies, among other areas, to: Sorobon, Cai, and the entire area between the Salt Company Wharf and Willemstoren, including Pink Beach and Peleké.
It is allowed to walk dogs between Punt Vierkant and the Salt Company Wharf, and between Willemstoren and Sorobon, but only along the coastline.
Dogs are prohibited on the following beaches and coastal areas:
- Playa Lechi (Sunset Beach)
- Playa Pal’i Mangel (Donkey’s Beach and Te Amo Beach)
- Forn’i Kalki (Bachelor’s Beach)
- The area from Saliña (Salt Company Wharf) to Lacre Punt (Willemstoren)
- Sorobon and Cai
- Piedra Haltu (Thousand Steps)
- Tolo
- Nukove
- Klein Bonaire
In addition, dogs are not allowed on the property of Cargill Salt Company (including parts of the roads) without permission.
