In a competition featuring more than 31 countries and over 550 athletes, Leandro Santiesteban has put Aruba on the swimming map at the PanAm Aquatics Championships in Ibagué, Colombia.
After opening the championship with a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke, where he was the only 14-year-old athlete in the final and achieved a new personal best, Leandro continued to impress on the third day of competition.
In the 50-meter breaststroke, Leandro—once again the only 14-year-old in the final—faced the best swimmers in the Americas. With an extraordinary performance and a decisive touch at the wall, Leandro managed to clinch the long-awaited gold medal for Aruba.
This triumph is much more than a medal. It is the fruit of months and even years of discipline, sacrifice, perseverance, and passion for his sport. Leandro has shown that age is not a barrier when preparation, character, and determination come together.
The Stingray Swimming Team is extremely proud of this historic achievement. Leandro has not only won gold but has also inspired an entire generation with the message that no dream is too big for a child from Aruba.
