GroenLinks/PvdA: Raoul White acknowledges the struggles Caribbean students face with student debt

Raoul White of GroenLinks/PvdA also took part in the “Politiek Café” debate organized by the Arubahuis, emphasizing that discussions like these are essential as they allow both politicians and students to share knowledge and perspectives.
White believes that young people represent the future, and it is crucial to listen to their voices and give them the attention they deserve.
“If we as a party can work together with the voices of young people, that is of great value,” said White.
He noted that one of the major challenges faced by Caribbean students studying in the Netherlands is the high level of student debt. Studying is expensive, and for those coming from the islands, additional costs — such as housing, clothing, food, and transportation — make it even more burdensome.
“When you decide to study in the Netherlands, you must be aware that it’s a very costly decision,” White stated.

He further emphasized that Caribbean students who study in the Netherlands and plan to return home to contribute to their islands must also recognize the size of these debts — especially since repaying them becomes difficult when salaries on the islands are significantly lower.

White therefore proposed the creation of special funds to support students who wish to return and contribute to the local economy, allowing part of their student debt to be forgiven.
Such a measure, he explained, would help ease the financial burden on Caribbean students and encourage them to return and strengthen their home communities.
