Last Friday, the reopening of the Fontein water well took place. This official moment marked the successful restoration of the well, an important step within the broader project to rehabilitate all traditional water wells on Bonaire. In addition to the restoration of the well itself, a water trough was constructed and a solar-powered water pump was installed, further improving and modernizing the water supply.

Commissioner Clark Abraham highlighted the importance of these efforts during the inauguration:
“With the restoration of these water wells, we are strengthening the agricultural sector and contributing to greater self-sufficiency for our kunukeros. This is an investment in our community and in our future.”

Maurice Adriaans, head of LVV, also emphasized the value of the restoration work:
“Fontein Water Well is an important resource for the kunukeros of Tra’i Montaña. Thanks to the renovation, they can once again collect water efficiently and sustainably. We remain committed to gradually restoring all traditional water wells on Bonaire.”

The Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) has announced that the restoration of the Fontein water well has been successfully completed. The restoration work is part of the broader initiative to restore and reactivate all traditional water wells on the island.

With the completion of the work at Pos Fontein, another valuable water source has been made accessible. The well now provides reliable access to water for the kunukeros in the Tra’i Montaña area, enabling them to continue their agricultural activities more efficiently.

Earlier this year, the following water wells were also fully restored and improved:
* Wanapa water well
* Dos Pos water well
* Kavula water well

These wells have been equipped with solar power, making the process of pumping and collecting water significantly more efficient.

The OLB continues to invest in the maintenance and restoration of traditional water sources, which are not only historically valuable but also essential for Bonaire’s agricultural sector and long-term self-sufficiency.
