The PPA firmly believes that elections are a moment of democratic celebration. Not every country in the world has the privilege for its people to express their will democratically, and we must recognize and honor that. On October 29, the Netherlands went to the polls, and the result is clear. Democracy is alive, and the voice of the Dutch people has spoken clearly.
“We, as the Aruban Patriotic Party, have closely followed the developments. Not only because Aruba has a special relationship with the Netherlands, but also because the elections there can influence political and economic developments in Aruba itself. Out of the 150 seats in the Dutch House of Representatives, the final result was surprising, showing a new political dynamic and a community’s desire for change and a new direction,” said Eduard Pieters.

Surprising result
According to polls, many expected PVV, GroenLinks–PvdA, VVD, and CDA to lead; but the biggest surprise was D66, which emerged as the largest party. Eduard Pieters emphasized:
“From the PPA faction, we didn’t see this coming, but that’s what democracy is: dynamic, alive, unpredictable, and always based on the people’s voice. We wish to congratulate D66 and the entire Dutch population for a transparent election and a result that reflects a strong commitment to democratic values. Congratulations and much success also to D66 leader Rob Jetten, who now carries the honor and great responsibility of guiding the Netherlands through this new stage. Congratulations as well to PVV, GroenLinks–PvdA for maintaining a strong social voice, and to all other parties that participated in the democratic process.”

Vision aligned with the PPA
D66 is a social-liberal party: a combination of individual freedom and social advancement, of progress and modernization. The PPA also has its roots in the social-democratic and progressive movement.
“If we look back to the time of Juancho Irausquin and the direction of ‘Plan Nos Aruba 2050’, we see the same ideals: progressivism, social justice, and the building of a sustainable future for our people,” Pieters declared.

A more social political landscape
The Dutch political landscape now shows the possibility of a more social, centrist coalition, with more focus on equality of opportunity and human development.
“D66’s ideology, which values freedom and individual self-determination, can also be applied within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This is a very positive sign for Aruba. We hope that the future relationship will be based on mutual respect, understanding, and a progressive view of autonomy and the development of the islands,” Pieters stressed.

According to Eduard, this is particularly important for us as an island, because Aruba is currently in a crucial phase of discussions concerning the Rijkswet HOFA and the national WHO ordinance, where autonomy and local governance are central issues.
A Dutch government more open to social dialogue and autonomy can create a fairer space to address these matters.

PPA maintains its firm position: Self-determination for Aruba
Finally, Eduard Pieters stated:
“The PPA remains firm in our vision for self-determination, progress, and mutual respect. And now that D66 has emerged victorious, we see a potential ally within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We already planned to meet with GroenLinks–PvdA, CDA, and D66, and now that the elections are over, the time has come to move forward with constructive, respectful dialogue focused on the future of all members of the Kingdom.”
