Last Wednesday, the Parliament of Aruba experienced a historic moment in which the determination of the MEP faction prevailed. Thanks to the initiative of Parliamentarians Edgard Vrolijk and Rocco Tjon, we now have laws that truly help combat the so-called “street racing madness” (reckless driving) that causes so much pain in our families.
What was the problem?
Parliamentarian Endy Croes explained that for many years, the definition of “reckless driving” was unclear. The old law tied the hands of the Police and made it difficult for judges to apply heavier penalties because it was not clearly measurable what did or did not constitute reckless driving.
“Thanks to the vision of Edgard and Rocco since 2019, we have been working on this path to give authorities the tools to act against those who have no respect for the lives of others,” Croes stated.
What has changed now?
The new law introduces concrete steps to put an end to the chaos on the roads:
- New Article 2a: Full clarity on what constitutes irresponsible driving.
- Article 4a (Hit and Run): Those who hit someone and flee, or crash into a light pole and leave injured victims behind, will now feel the strong hand of the law.
- Minimum Sentence: For these offenses, the minimum sentence has increased from 3 months to 1 year in prison.
- Maximum Sentence: In the Criminal Code, the maximum penalty has been doubled from 4 years to 8 years for the most serious offenses.
MEP working for your well-being
Croes emphasized that the law was approved unanimously.
“Even the parliamentarians of AVP and Futuro felt obligated to stand alongside MEP,” Croes said. “They had no choice but to vote in favor of the good work of our colleagues. That’s the difference: while others talk, MEP acts and changes laws to benefit the entire people!”
Demand to Government: Enforcement Now!
Endy Croes sent a clear message to the current Government: “Parliament has fulfilled its duty; now it’s your turn.”
He demanded that the current government ensure proper enforcement on the roads and begin awareness campaigns in schools immediately.
Your friend is always there for you!
In closing, Endy once again congratulated his colleagues: “Congratulations Edgard and Rocco! To the citizens who feel afraid on the road: let us take responsibility, drive calmly, and if you make a mistake on the road, remember you will be held accountable!”
